Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Invasion of the Body Snatchers, is a sci-fi/ horror movie from the 1960’s, and one of the reasons it stands out so much, is the fact that even though its special effects are really simplistic, the uses of shadows and camera angles make these things work. These things are the pods that “people” are born from (and those were made out of paper-mache and some soap suds). Ahhhh, isn’t it amazing what you can do with paper-mache and time on your hands.

Overall we at THE REALLY BAD MOVIE REVIEW liked this movie, and stamps it a STAND OUT CLASSIC. In the days of horrid B movies, and sci-fi movies about as realistic feeling as the Atari, Body Snatchers makes its mark by being a really good suspense movie. Lots of lowlight camera angles and shots are used to help bring the effects to life.Body Snatchers lulls you a false sense of security, only to slap you in the face with a stunning twist in the middle. After a hectic account from the protagonist of the film, we move into a flashback about how these incidents occurred. The movie seems slow at first with a normal town going about its business, we center in on the character of the doctor who is treating a child who seems to be fear stricken. The child, refusing to believe his uncle is in fact his uncle, finally convinces his grandmother to take him home with her, and the doctor agrees, helping the child’s cause.

All of the sudden his ex wife or another divorcee (I’m kind of unsure of this) comes into his office. He is overjoyed to see her, so we assume she’s an ex of some sort, and they get into conversation, and he gives her a ride. Curious as he drives along the road and noticing little things are out of place, he turns to her and begins to talk to her about these small oddities.

Curiosity now peaked, he goes to see the uncle himself, and upon finding that nothing is wrong dismisses it as nothing. Just an overactive imagination or  something along those lines. He goes home and “has sex” with his ex and then we cut to black and a storm outside. Later that daythe doctor leaves the office after arranging a dinner date, jolly as can be, with of course his ex from the night before. Upon arrival there the doctor notices the first weird thing is that theres no one going out ot diner. The doctor questions the bartender about it an the bartender tells him attendance ha been decreasing since the other day. The same day that the boy had tolsd the doctor that hisuncle wasnt actually his uncle. Then the phone rings. Its an urgent call from his friend who demands  that the doctor comes over immediately. Upon arrival, the doctors friend tries to explain to him  the situation at hand and what he had found. He explains he found a body, but not just any body, he found his own body. Baffled by this the doctor demands to see, and upon seeing states there is such striking resemblance between the two thats it almost uncanny. perplexed and fearful the doctor leaves to go get help, but when no one answers their phone he speeds back to his friends house.

The next day is business as usual for the most part, until they see whats going on outside. Im not going to ruin this for you so well skip ahead, but it is deduced they can get you when you sleep. REEL LOST. CONTACT MANAGER.

Another discovery had been made, this one even more important than the last. PODS! yes pods his friend proclaimed. The doctor sees the pods, and calls for the FBI and military in Los Angeles. After no response, he confronts his friends, who decide they will catch up with them when they run. No response from LA or Washington must be a problem, duh, so its time to get the hell out of dodge.

The couple drive until they can drive no more. Then they run in an epic chase scen through the Hollywood hills, the couple finally hide in a mine. The doctor dose his best to keep the girl awake, but she falls asleeep and has her body sntched like the rest of them. The doctor is chased by the group until he hits the Los Angeles freeway where he begs people to stop because the world is ending, and blah blah blah.

Seriously though the acting is really good as is the movie. I haven’t reviewed it with the new ending, but the original. In the new one proof is found  that he’s not nuts.

I Would give this a 4 out of 5 jason masks for awesomeness.

  1. There’s a version out without that added ending? That’s awesome, because I really didn’t like the ending to this one.

Also, the ending in the 1978 version of The Invasion of The Body Snatcher was also really well made.

  2. I completely agree with the fact that although the special effects are simple and could be done so much better now a days that they really did work! I think that since this is a science fiction film it was important to the quality of the film that it didn’t end up to over the top where it looks completely fake like some cheesy made for TV movie. I also am really glad there is a version without the ending because for me that ruined it. I wish it was never put there, although well made it took away from the film.
